How to use the audio lessons
If
you are very short of time, please just listen to and speak the
dialogue. If you have enough time (5-15 minutes or more), please follow
these 10 stages:
1. Listen twice to the audio file without looking at the words. Look away from the computer screen.
2. Ask yourself what the speakers are talking about. If possible, say aloud what you think they are talking about.
3.
Try to write the exact words that are hidden – use them as a dictation.
You can pause the audio file, and use the audio slider to move back and
forward in the audio file. You can also listen to the slow audio file,
which you will find at the bottom of each lesson box.
4.
Now, uncover the hidden words by clicking once on each black-out area.
Check to see if your dictation is correct. Notice which words were
difficult to hear – these are often the small words that are not
stressed.
5. Listen again to the dialogue with all the text uncovered.
6.
Read the dialogue aloud (in other words, speak the dialogue), without
the audio file. Practise this 2 or 3 times. Try to copy the
pronunciation, rhythm and tone of the English speakers.
7.
Listen to the audio and read the dialogue aloud at the same time. In
other words, speak along with the audio file. Try this 2 or 3 times (or
more!), until you can speak in the same style as the English speakers. This stage is very important! Please do not skip it!
Concentrate
on pronunciation, rhythm, tone and speed. You can also read along with
the slow audio file, and the icon for this is at the base of each lesson
box. Using the slow audio file before the fast one will help you link
the words together more naturally. If possible, please also record
yourself and then compare your voice to the native speakers in the
lesson.
8. Now, please
listen to the audio again 3 times, without reading the text. Look away
from the computer screen. This time you will understand the conversation
perfectly. Try to speak along with the audio as well, but please don’t
worry if you can’t say all of it. It’s a good idea to try this stage of
the lessons the next day as well.
9. Finally, please try saying the dialogue, or parts of it, without the audio or text. Don’t worry if you make mistakes!
Just try again, and remember, this is a learning process so over time
you’ll get better and better at it. So just trust yourself and trust the
process.
After listening
to and speaking the same conversation so many times, you will
automatically learn the grammar and vocabulary without really trying,
and you will find that you remember it well.
10. If you have more time, please write the new vocabulary in a book, and add new words to it every day.

Introduction
I am a highly-qualified English teacher, with over 15 years experience of teaching in London.
I
started the DailyStep audio email lesson service because I so often
notice that, when starting their English course, my students’ speaking
and listening skills are much weaker than their reading and writing
skills. In my view, this is because education in school does not focus
enough on communication skills. DailyStep is designed to remedy this
situation by improving speaking, listening and vocabulary. I use it in
my own classes and the language and ideas included in the audio lessons
often directly reflect the questions that my students ask in class.
I love teaching English and I am passionate about the English language. It is a real pleasure for me to see the development of my students’ language skills, and how a broader vocabulary and knowledge of grammar allows them to express and understand increasingly complex ideas.
My qualifications:
- Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) from International House, Piccadilly, London.
- Bachelor of Law (LL.B) - 2nd class Honours
- English A Level - Grade A
- Business and Professional English - Grade A
- English Language O Level - Grade A
- English Literature O Level - Grade A
My Background
I majored in Law at university, passing with an Honours degree, and then worked for three years as a researcher and journalist for Sky television and BBC magazines. I decided to change to English teaching because of my love of the English language and my wish to move into more satisfying work.
I qualified as an English teacher in 1992, at International House in London, an institution affiliated to the British Council. My first teaching job was at a language school in Covent Garden, London, where I taught examination classes and business English. After 2 years, I moved to the Nippon Club, Piccadilly, where I taught General English and Business English courses for 9 years. I also developed a unique course called British Society & Culture, covering all areas of British Life, such as politics, law, education & music. At the same time, I taught Business, Financial & Legal English in the City, the financial centre of London. My clients have included Mitsubishi UFJ Securities International Plc, The Korea Exchange Bank, UBS Warburg, Richards Butler International Law firm & Credit Suisse.
As well as preparing and recording the audio lessons and running the DailyStep website & database (which take up a lot of my time!), I also provide in-company English training for financial and legal companies in London. I specialise in presentation and speech training, from planning and writing stages, through to successful, confident delivery. If you have an important speech or business presentation coming up and would like some information about how I can help you, please email me at jane@dailystep.com
My examination teaching experience includes the following exams:
- T.O.E.I.C
- T.O.E.F.L
- Cambridge First Certificate
- Cambridge Advanced
- Cambridge Proficiency
- The London Chamber of Commerce & Industry examinations in Business English
If have any questions at all, please contact me at jane@dailystep.com. I would very much appreciate it if you could write your email in English.

07. Why isn't DailyStep free?
There are so many free websites for learning English – so how do they work? They will tell you that they believe learning should be free – but of course they make money by showing advertisements and selling your email addresses to marketing companies. The result for you is loss of concentration, and constant disturbance to your learning experience. How can you really focus on something when there are advertisements on the page and unwanted emails arriving from companies who have bought your email address?
.
I believe that paying a small price for your lessons will reward you with a clearer mind, allowing you to really focus on the language and learn it well. On my website, instead of advertisements you can see blue sky a summer’s day! The background blue is taken from a photograph I took on holiday. Blue sky for a clear mind!
08. How can I access my Personal Lesson Bank?
If you are a subscriber, all your lessons are stored in a Personal Lesson Bank, so you can take them as many times as you like.
.
To go to your lesson bank, please log in, then go to My Membership > My Lesson Bank.
09. How many lessons will I get after subscribing?
The way my program works is that you receive 5 lessons per week, so every month you get approximately 22 lessons per level. The lessons are sent from Monday to Friday - we all need a rest at weekends!
..
If you don't have time to take a lesson every day, you can log in later to your Personal Lesson Bank to catch up with lessons or download audio files.10. How does the program work?
The audio lessons are specially designed to improve your speaking and listening skills, and to teach you important words, idioms and grammar. They take only 5 - 10 minutes each day to complete, and you can log in and take your lessons from any computer.
.
- Each weekday (Monday to Friday), you receive an email containing a link that takes you straight to your audio lesson.
- Each audio lesson contains a short conversation, with an audio file and script, as well as vocabulary and style notes to help you understand it.
- Key phrases in the conversation are hidden at first so you can test your listening skills. You can then uncover the hidden text.
- You speak along with the audio files to improve your pronunciation, rhythm, speed and intonation
- All your lessons are stored for you in an online Personal Lesson Bank so you can log in to take them again any time, or catch up on lessons you have missed. You can even log in after your subscription has expired.
- You can download the MP3 audio files to your computer or i-pod.
You will soon find that your speaking and listening skills improve quickly!
11. Which DailyStep level should I choose?
You
choose the level yourself that you think will be challenging for you -
not too easy, not too hard. You then receive 5 lessons per level each
week (Monday to Friday). Every month you get approximately 22 lessons
per level. If you subscribe for a year, you will get 260 lessons at the
level or levels you choose.
.
You may want to take several levels, using the lower levels as revision, the middle levels for following and copying the speakers, and the higher levels to push you listening skills further and to learn new vocabulary and idioms.
13. How many lessons are in each level?
There is no particular length of course for each level and you can change your level any time after joining. All levels are ongoing - in other words, you could subscribe to level 4 and stay with it for 2 years if you wished. Or you could subscribe to it and then decide to go up to level 5 after a couple of months.
You stay with each level for as long as you find it challenging, and you raise your level as your listening and speaking skills improve.
14. How much does it cost and how to subscribe?
The
prices are different depending on the level and time period of your
subscription. If you want to pay monthly, the price is between £4 and £8 GBP (British Pounds) per month. It is cheaper if you pay for a longer time period.
.
If you would like to subscribe to my regular audio lessons, please visit my subscription page. This is the way to get new audio lessons every day. On my website, you can subscribe automatically using a credit card, debit card or PayPal account. If you would prefer to pay by Direct Bank transfer, MoneyBookers, Western Union or MoneyGram cash transfer, please email me at jane@dailystep.com and I'll send you the instructions
My way of teaching English
A child learns to speak English by listening, understanding and copying. This is exactly the method I use in my online lessons.
You listen several times, you understand the English by reading the dialogue and notes, then you say it yourself, copying the exact English pronunciation, rhythm, tone and speed. Also just like a child, you learn the English grammar and vocabulary naturally during conversation.
.
Please go ahead and save the audio files on this website to your computer or portable music player. You can listen to them at any time. While you are listening, try talking along with the English speakers, copying their exact pronunciation, rhythm and tone. You will soon find you can say the dialogue perfectly, and the process of repeating will allow you to learn new grammar and vocabulary naturally, without having to study it.
.
Then, you can try saying the dialogue, or parts of it, without the audio or text. Don’t worry if you make mistakes! Just try again, and remember, this is a learning process so over time you’ll get better and better at it. So just trust yourself and trust the process.
.
After subscribing to my audio lessons here on DailyStep.com, you can review past lessons any time in your personal lesson bank. So it's a good idea to test your progress by returning to a lesson you found difficult and trying it again. If you have been practising my method, I guarantee you will be able to say it and understand it better than before.
