"…Keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus."(Hebrews 12:2)
At one point during the Israelites' journey to the Promised Land, God told them to make a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. That way, anyone who was bitten by a serpent could look at the snake and live (Numbers 21:8-9). Likewise, Jesus told Nicodemus: "Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life" (John 3:14-15).
On one level, fixing our eyes on Jesus is a physical action. We look at the cross hanging in our church or our home, and the very image fills us with wonder. on a deeper level, the author of Hebrews is asking us to fix our "spiritual eyes" on Jesus the eyes of our hearts, so to speak, so that we can come in touch with the mind of Christ.
As we fix our eyes on Jesus, we will see his tender love for us. He knows us intimately. He never looks down on us, threatens us, or rejects us. He is always calling out to us, "Come to me, and I will give you rest."
As we fix our eyes on Jesus, we will hear him telling us that we can count on him. We will hear him say, "My word is unchanging" (1 Peter 1:24-25). "My salvation is unchanging" (Hebrews 7:24-25). "My love is unchanging" (Jeremiah 31:3) "My gifts are unchanging" (James 1:17). And, "I myself am unchanging" (Malachi 3:6).
So today, fix your eyes on Jesus, so that the very presence of God can become your strength. Like Moses, insist on being in his presence (Exodus 33:13-15). Like King David, confess that you can't live without him (Psalm 27:8). You will find your time with Jesus becoming the most important part of your day. Why? Because, just as Jesus promised Nicodemus, you will find yourself being lifted up to heaven!

“ … 예수님을 바라봅시다.”(히브 12,2)
이스라엘 백성이 약속의 땅을 향해 광야를 가던 어느 날, 하느님께서 그들에게 구리 뱀을 만들어 기둥 위에 달아 놓으라고 하시면서 그렇게 하면 뱀에 물린 자는 그것을 ‘보면’ 살게 될 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다.(민수 21,8-9) 이와 마찬가지로, 예수님께서는 니코데모에게 이렇게 말씀하셨지요. “모세가 광야에서 뱀을 들어 올린 것처럼, 사람의 아들도 들어 올려져야 한다. 믿는 사람은 누구나 사람의 아들 안에서 영원한 생명을 얻게 하려는 것이다.”(요한 3,14-15)
예수님을 바라보는 하나의 차원은 그분을 육안으로 보는 것입니다. 성당이나 집에 걸린 십자가를 바라볼 때면 주님의 모습 자체가 우리에게 경이로움을 안겨 줍니다. 히브리서의 저자는 보다 더 심오한 차원에서 ‘영적인 눈’으로 예수님을 바라보라고, 즉 그리스도의 정신을 접할 수 있는 마음의 눈을 가지라고 호소합니다.
우리는 예수님을 바라볼 때 우리를 향한 그분의 온유하신 사랑을 봅니다. 우리를 속속들이 아시는 예수님께서는 절대로 우리를 경시하거나 겁주거나 내치지 않으시며 항상 이렇게 부르십니다. “나에게 와 편히 쉬어라.”
우리는 예수님을 바라볼 때면 당신께 의지하라고 우리에게 하시는 말씀을 듣습니다. 그분은 이렇게 말씀하실 것입니다. “내 말은 변하지 않는다.”(1베드 1,24-25) “내 구원은 변하지 않는다.”(히브 7,24-25) “내 사랑은 변하지 않는다.”(예레 31,3) “나의 은총은 변하지 않는다.”(야고 1,17) 그리고 “나 주님은 변하지 않는다.”(말라 3,6)
그러니 오늘 예수님을 바라봄으로써 바로 그 하느님의 현존이 당신의 힘이 되게 하십시오. 모세처럼 하느님과 함께 있겠다고 고집하세요.(탈출 33,13-15) 다윗 임금처럼 주님 없이는 살 수 없다고 고백하세요.(시편 27,8) 그러면 당신은 예수님과 함께 머무는 시간이 당신 일과의 가장 소중한 부분임을 알게 될 것입니다. 왜냐구요? 예수님께서 니코데모에게 약속하신 것처럼 당신도 하늘로 들어 올려졌음을 알게 될 테니까요!
